Songfacts®:

  • Paul Weller first met backing singer Hannah Andrews in 2009 when she was working in a New York bar. Ignoring a 27-year gap, they married the following year. This song tells how their romance ignited at a time when Weller wasn't seeking love. He sings about the "crystal kiss" that "lingered long" on their lips and remained for days, which turned to weeks, then grew into years. "I wasn't looking," Weller told Uncut magazine. "I had no idea. I was looking for nothing. Just another drink."
  • Weller co-produced "New York" with his long-term collaborator, Stan Kybert. The singer also played electric guitar, bass, piano and synths. The other musicians are:

    Electric guitar: Steve Craddock
    Drums and percussion: Ben Gordelier
    Hammond: Andy Croft
Strings: Paloma Deike, Amy Stanford, Laura Stanford, Jessica Cox
  • Since Weller met Hannah Andrews on that fateful day in New York, she's been the muse for many of his songs, including "Study In Blue," "Going My Way," "Glad Times," and "Failed."
