Songfacts®:

  • This song does what it says on the tin! Paula Abdul is asking her lover to marry her. It was released just a few weeks before Abdul tied the knot with the actor Emilio Estevez (the couple split in 1994).

"Will You Marry Me?" was written by the songwriter Peter Lord, who told Songfacts: "Paula had a title and feel for the song and we built the foundation from there."
  • Stevie Wonder played harmonica on this song. Lord told us how this collaboration came about: "One of us said, 'Wouldn't it be great to get Stevie to play on the track?' And Paula said, 'I can get him.' Stevie was, of course, incredible. He is truly my primary inspiration for even becoming a songwriter or musician. It was one of the highlights of my music career to work with my hero."
  • Spellbound was Abdul's second album and the follow-up to her 1988 debut Forever Your Girl. Lord told Songfacts about working with Abdul in the studio: "I found she gained much more confidence and actually vocal strength as time went on. And most importantly she was always definitely a hard worker."
