Songfacts®:

  • This song is about a guy who has an affair with his best friend's wife. It has a rather grim ending, as they are discovered and she is shot.
  • The Novum album was Procol Harum's 14th, and their first without lyricist Keith Reid. In his stead was Pete Brown, who wrote several songs with Cream, including "Sunshine Of Your Love" and "White Room." When he and Procol frontman Gary Brooker started writing for the album, Brooker suggested the theme "Ten Commandments." That theme was eventually dropped, but it still made its way onto some of the songs, including this one, which represents the Commandment "Thou shalt not commit adultery."
