• Before Puscifer was a band, it was a running joke. Maynard James Keenan first used the name in the '90s for fake bands in liner notes and comedy bits, treating it as a throwaway gag rather than a serious project. The name shows up on the first episode of the Bob Odenkirk/David Cross HBO sketch show Mr. Show, where Maynard (in a trucker hat) plays a spoof rock frontman in a mock rockumentary segment. The punchline eventually turned into an actual band, which is very on-brand for Puscifer.
• Before it officially became Puscifer, the project's working name was Umlaut, jokingly billed as "a premiere improvisational hardcore band." That comedy-first origin helps explain why Puscifer lean so heavily on skits, characters and visual concepts instead of behaving like a straight-ahead rock act.
• The first "real" Puscifer song many fans heard was "REV 22:20," which appeared on the 2003 Underworld soundtrack four years before their debut album.
• Early recordings pulled in an eclectic guest list, including Tim Alexander (Primus), Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk (Rage Against the Machine/Audioslave), Trey Gunn (King Crimson), violinist Lisa Germano, singer-songwriter Jonny Polonsky and actress/singer Milla Jovovich.
• The joke band solidified into a full studio project with the 2007 debut album "V" Is For Vagina. The title and some of the songs kept the cheeky humor, but the record also cemented the core sonic partnership between Maynard and engineer/producer Mat Mitchell.
• Puscifer's first proper live incarnation came with 2009 Las Vegas residencies that mixed songs with comedy sketches and stage characters. Maynard described it less as a tour and more as a traveling circus, joking that authorities advised fans to "be prepared for any and all possibilities," while the band suggested simply arriving "happy and hungry."
• British singer-songwriter Carina Round started out as a touring member before becoming a key writer and vocalist, completing the core trio of Maynard, Mat Mitchell and Carina. Live shows often feature elaborate personas, costumes and loose storylines, with Keenan and Round taking on recurring roles (from government agents to cult-like figures), blurring the line between concert and theater.
• Where Tool deals in mythic heaviness and A Perfect Circle in polished alt-rock melancholy, Puscifer gives Keenan space for satire, absurdity and direct social commentary. Albums like Existential Reckoning and Normal Isn't show how the project can shift from comedy to cultural autopsy in an instant, often within the same song.
