Songfacts®:

  • American Soldier is a concept album inspired by a large quantity of interviews with veterans conducted by Queensryche singer Geoff Tate. In this song, homesickness is addressed. Tate explained to Anybody Listening: "One of the soldiers was telling me about his experience with his wife. He had been married very young, at 19, and the stress of being away from each other and in a very dangerous situation, as well as the age factor, made the relationship one that didn't last. That seemed to be a common thread with a lot of the people I talked to."
  • As the closing song on the album, "Remembr Me" provides some insight into Geoff Tate's overall perspective of war. It's a deeply humanizing song about a forlorn soldier whose biggest regret is not realizing how much more important his true love was than anything else before he signed on to the military. Rather than being bitter, however, he simply hopes that she remembers him while he's gone. It casts war as both tragic and inevitable.
