Songfacts®:

  • Rachel Platten wrote this song after receiving some disappointing news and having a fight with some people she's close to. "There was an opportunity that I wanted so badly and I didn't get it," she recalled. "I went over to my piano and tears were falling down... and that line, 'Congratulations, you got what you wanted,' came out."

"It starts off with, 'I'm stupid and confused, my ego's raw and bruised,'" Platten added. "That's the actual journal entry that I had written after the fight. That's a personal one... that one hurt."
  • Platten penned this with American producer Scott Jacoby, who has also worked with John Legend, Vanessa Hudgens and Fabolous. As a recording artist, Jacoby had a #1 single in Japan in 2004 with his song, "I Like You."
