Songfacts®:

  • This song was written in Los Angeles by Rae Morris and her collaborator/new boyfriend Fryars aka Ben Garrett (Mika's "Celebrate").

"There was a Champions League football match on between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid and Fryars wanted to watch it and I though Atletico was such an amazing name and word" Morris explained to BBC Radio 1's Annie Mac. "The song's about going on a night out and feeling like you didn't do yourself justice, and you didn't meet enough people and say hi to that guy or girl."
  • The song's music video was shot on Bourbon Street in the famous French quarter of New Orleans. According to Morris, the Big Easy was "the perfect place for this video because it's such a joyous city with the most infectious energy."
  • Rae Morris recorded "Atletico (The Only One)" for Someone Out There, her second studio album with Atlantic Records. Despite generally positive reviews from music critics, the album stalled at #20 on the UK chart. Morris got the dreaded call from her label, telling the singer they'd dropped her.
