Songfacts®:

  • Running to 7:11 on the original release, this ballad written by Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio about love lost has been fairly well covered, including by Mr. Blackmore himself. It includes a string arrangement by the Bavarian String Ensemble, and flute.

Entirely downtempo with no soloing, it is a total anomaly, and perhaps a premonition of what was to come when the legendary guitarist launched the inspirational Blackmore's Night with his future wife, Candice Night. Curiously, when it appeared on the Blackmore's Night album Secret Voyage in 2008, Blackmore included some lead guitar. This version runs to around 5 minutes 57 seconds with fade out. >>
