Songfacts®:

  • "Zeit" is the German word for "time," and this powerful ballad finds Rammstein singer Till Lindemann begrudging the passing of time. In the first verse, he laments the aging process that leads to our demise.

    Youth turns into hardship
We keep dying until we live
    Die alive to death

The second verse sees Lindemann in a perfect moment with his lover. He resents that moment is only fleeting and he can't enjoy that blissful time forever.

I'm lying here in your arms
    Oh, it could be forever
    But time knows no mercy
    The moment is already over

During the chorus, Lindemann implores time to halt, but he knows it's a vain hope.

    Time
    Please stop, stop
    Time
It should always go on like this

  • Rammstein released "Zeit" as the first single from their album of the same name on March 10, 2022.

Rammstein spent two years working on the record's 11 tracks at La Fabrique Studios in St. Rémy de Provence, Southern France. The Berlin-based producer Olsen Involtini, who previously worked with the band on their 2019 eponymous album, again assisted the German band.
  • The Canadian musician Bryan Adams took the shot of Rammstein that appears on the album cover. It shows the band standing on the stairs of the Trudelturm in Adlershof, Berlin, a monument to aerial research in the city's Aerodynamic Park.
  • Actor and musician Robert Gwisdek directed the song's music video, collaborating with Rammstein for the first time.
  • "Zeit" spent one week at #1 in Germany, becoming Rammstein's third chart-topper in their home country. They previously visited the summit with "Pussy" and "Deutschland."
  • Zeit was the best-selling album in Germany in 2022.
