Songfacts®:

  • This heartfelt tribute to the late Country legend George Jones was the first single to be released from Randy Travis' thirteenth mainstream studio album. "I am very thankful I got to know George," Travis wrote on his website at the time of Jones' death in April 2013. "He's one of the greatest singers that ever lived. I actually loved the man and really enjoyed the time I got to spend with him & [his wife] Nancy."
  • The song was written by the Austin, Texas, Country singer Keith Gattis, who is best known for recording the original version of Kenny Chesney's "El Cerrito Place."
  • Travis is accompanied on the song by Joe Nichols, who tweeted to his fans, that it was "an honor" to share the vocal duties on the cut.
  • George Jones' nickname of "The Possum" arose from the shape of his nose and facial features.
