Songfacts®:

  • Raul Midón told Songfacts this song is about "the mysterious state of sleep."
  • Joni Mitchell's "Paprika Plains" inspired Midón to write this. Lyrically, they are similar. "Paprika Plains" starts with Mitchell in a small-town bar. When she steps outside, she enters a sort of dream state, and the song becomes an exploration of a surreal world in vivid color.

In "Ocean Dreamer," Midón starts not in a bar but in a hotel room, and the focal point of his dreamscape is the ocean rather than a paprika-colored landscape.
