Songfacts®:

  • "Step Into Your Power" is a lush, soul-infused song straight out of the 1970s. Ray LaMontagne has taken that rich, vintage vibe and poured into it a call to believe in yourself, your dreams, and your worth. This theme of inner strength and self-affirmation is reinforced throughout the song, particularly in its gospel-infused chorus:

    Step on up
    Step into your power
    Step on up
    Step into your power, child

"I believe that the only meaningful life is the life that follows your own individual path," LaMontagne told UK newspaper The Sun. "It is a leap of faith. You have to trust that all the tools you need, you already own. Our current culture is so far removed from this simple truth. I can't help but feel the needs to shout it into the world with all I have. You do not need to look to others to validate yourself or your journey, as our pop culture so relentlessly tries to convince us."
  • LaMontagne's gospel-like chorus is backed by The Secret Sisters - real sisters from Alabama whose harmonies add a silky punch to the whole thing. These two have also lent their voices to artists like Dave Stewart ("Country Wine"), Jamey Johnson ("Mele Kalikimaka") and Brandi Carlile ("Losing Heart"). Here, their harmonies help pull the song into a Motown-influenced foot-tapping groove.
  • The stop-motion video was crafted by LaMontagne's son, Tobias, in a style that feels like a blend of retro magazine clippings and animated pop-art.

"Tobias and I have always enjoyed working together creatively," said LaMontagne. "From animated short films to song videos. He is entirely self-taught and very passionate about film and cinema. I am always amazed at how he can turn an idea into a reality. He has an innate talent for visual art. That's the part of imagination and creativity."
  • "Step Into Your Power" is part of LaMontagne's ninth album, Long Way Home. LaMontagne recorded the album in his home studio and produced it in collaboration with Seth Kauffman. A North Carolina-based musician, songwriter, and producer, Kauffman has released a series of albums under the name Floating Action. He played on three previous LaMontagne releases (Supernova, Ouroboros, and Part of the Light), but this is the first one he co-produced.
  • LaMontagne released "Step Into Your Power" as the lead single from Long Way Home on June 5, 2024. It climbed to #1 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay chart dated August 17, 2024, becoming LaMontagne's third single to top the chart. He previously reached the summit with "Beg Steal or Borrow" in 2010 and "Strong Enough" in 2020.
