  • In this song, Republica lead singer Saffron sings about having a conflicted relationship with a guy named Jimmy, who comes down from the Northwest. She wrote the lyric with the band's guitarist, Johnny Glue, who is dyslexic. He was the one who named the main character Jimmy.

"But funny enough, Jimmy is the name of my first boyfriend," Saffron explained to Songfacts. "So for me it still was something of a truth. Johnny and I, in our dyslexic communication, talk about our daily lives and how we feel, and I was feeling a bit weird and discombobulated. But it's actually quite a good song. The message of 'Try Everything' is still empowering."
  • Republica was the three-piece by this point, with keyboard player Tim Dorney joining Saffron and Johnny Glue. All three are credited as songwriters along with an outside writer named Guy Batson, whose other co-writes include "Hug My Soul" by Saint Etienne and "Baby" by Rozalla.
  • "Try Everything" was the second single from Republica's second album, Speed Ballads, following "From Rush Hour With Love." It didn't chart, but it never had much of a chance. The band's record label imploded around this time and didn't even release the album or the singles in America, all after Republica did so much work to support their first (eponymous) album, which includes the hits "Ready To Go" and "Drop Dead Gorgeous." They split up a few years later but got back together in the late '00s. Saffron became a mental health worker during the pandemic and stayed in that role while keeping Republica going. In 2023, Speed Ballads was released on vinyl for the first time as part of Record Store Day.
