Songfacts®:

  • In the heart of Ride's seventh album, Interplay, lies "Last Night I Went Somewhere To Dream," a track that feels like a psychedelic awakening. A swirling vortex of sound – that's the essence of "Last Night." Guitars shimmer and tangle, vocals are hazy whispers, and the whole thing creates a dreamy, almost hypnotic atmosphere. Placed at the beginning of what would be the second side of a vinyl record, it's a full-on Ride experience.
  • The lyrics are cryptic as ever, with hints of frustration ("the wheel of suffering" turning with "diminishing returns") alongside a yearning for wide-eyed innocence. But that's all part of the Ride charm. The music does most of the talking, taking the listener on a journey through swirling soundscapes.
  • "Last Night I Went Somewhere To Dream" started with drummer Loz Colbert laying down a backing track and the title. The rest of the band just had to climb aboard this sonic spaceship and add their touches.

"I knew we were getting somewhere when we recorded it," guitarist and vocalist Andy Bell told Uncut magazine. "It gave the whole record a kind of 1980s wide screen mood. Not Madonna but Talk Talk, Tears For Fears, U2 – the stuff we were really into at school at a formative age. For this record we would sit and listen to 'The Unforgettable Fire,' and 'Life's What You Make It.' It's uplifting and anthemic, but still quite melancholy. Which we all like."
