Birmingham-born Roy Wood co-founded three groups who had major chart success in the UK, The Move in 1966, The Electric Light Orchestra in 1971 and the following year Wizzard. Wood began recording as a solo artist in 1973, and this song was the third of four Top 20 hits he had in the UK.
Like many of Wood's creations, this was an eccentric number, in this instance combining reggae, and a Scottish Reel, complete with bagpipes. Wood said of the song's origin: "It was pretty silly really. I'd always wanted to do a reggae thing. I was messing about with drum rhythms, and the reggae beat was like a marching beat... and the obvious thing to go with a marching beat is a Scottish Reel."
