Songfacts®:

  • Rudimental recruited 2012 The X Factor winner James Arthur to provide the vocals for this song. The singer is best know for his UK chart-topping singles "Impossible" and "Say You Won't Let Go."
  • Initially written about moving on after the end of a romance, the song's message about overcoming adversity touched James Arthur in a completely different way. The singer had struggled with mental health issues after winning X Factor before coming back from the edge and he saw the song's message in a different light. Rudimental's Kesi Dryden explained:

"The song is actually about a relationship breakup and how there is a new day when the sun comes up. But when James heard the song he said the message he got from it was there has been a lot of negative times in the past but when the sun comes up it is a new day, you have a new chance. We always help each other out through the tough times. There was a new lease of life he got from it."
  • Rudimental wrote "Sun Comes Up" in their Major Toms studio in Hackney, East London. They told Clash Music that it took them some time to find the right singer for the track, but once James Arthur laid down his vocals "it took the song to a whole new level."
