  • Sam Fender grew up in a family where church was a regular fixture – especially on his mother's side. From a young age, he was surrounded by Christian teachings, but as Fender grew older, he found it didn't quite fit him the way it did for others. And while he doesn't subscribe to the faith that shaped his early life, he remains fascinated by it, grappling with its complexities in his own way.

"Little Bit Closer" reflects this inner turmoil and search for understanding. It's a raw, honest exploration of Fender's experience growing up in a religious environment. As much as he questions the doctrines of faith, he also expresses empathy for those who have been hurt by religious institutions - especially those close to him.
  • Fender recounts a memorable experience when, at 16, he attended a "God Camp" with his guitarist, Dean Thompson. The camp, ostensibly designed to deepen faith, left him with more questions than answers and planted a seed of cynicism.

Yeah, I was lost in their
Sermons and lies at God camp

Mischief soon followed, as Fender and Thompson's youthful irreverence took over. One infamous prank saw them drawing a satanic pentagram on the head of the camp's cabin using Durex lubricant.
  • Despite his religious skepticism, Fender finds something beautiful in the connections people share.

I don't buy the deities spoke of
But, in love, there's something to hold
And I get a little bit closer to it

Fender finds a little bit of the divine in the power of love: in those moments of closeness, of understanding, of being there for each other.
  • Fender recorded the slow-burning track for his third album, People Watching. He laid it down in London with producer Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire, Mumford & Sons, Wolf Alice) in 2023.
  • The music video was filmed in the scenic Lake District in northwest England. The narrative follows Owen Cooper, known for his breakout role in the Netflix drama Adolescence, as he joins a group of friends on a camping trip. Cooper's character quietly reflects on questions of faith and spirituality during their time in the Lakes.

Philip Barantini, who previously worked with Fender on his "Spit Of You" video and directed Adolescence, brings a cinematic touch to the project.
