Songfacts®:

  • In the United States, insulting or even defaming the President is not a crime. All manner of so-called conspiracy theorists have accused Bill Clinton of ordering the Oklahoma bombing and accused George W. Bush of ordering 9/11.

At worst, such claims are given the silent treatment by the media, but insult the President - or even the former President - in South Africa, and you could end up in court; this is the new, post-Apartheid South Africa.

Shane McCallaghan, who performs under the (appropriate!) stage name Shane Die Vark, ie Shane The Pig, found himself on the wrong end of the law after performing "Mandela Is A Kaffir" at a drunken party. Although the song is sung in Afrikaans, a few of its lyrics can be made out in English, such as "Mandela is a kaffir."

While the presumably thick-skinned Mandela may not have taken this insult to heart, he probably wouldn't have taken too kindly to the claim that he slept with his own mother.

After much debate between those baying for his blood on the one hand and the free speech lobby on the other, "comedian" Shane apologized. In January 2001, he said he had made 50 CDs including a recording of this particular song about three years previously for members of his audience, though it appeared to have been pirated. The song is actually a remix of the South African National Anthem "Nkosi Sikelel' IAfrika." >>>
