Songfacts®:

  • In this ballad, Shania Twain seeks comfort in the times when she's feeling vulnerable or overwhelmed. She knows her man will be there to provide it, holding her in his arms and kissing her tenderly.

This man was her husband, Mutt Lange, who was also her producer and co-writer. They got married at the end of 1993 after a six-month romance that started as a working relationship. As their love grew, they teamed to write the songs for Twain's second album, The Woman In Me. They proved to be a remarkably successful songwriting team, but their marriage didn't make it past 2010, when the couple divorced.
  • This song provides the title for the album. Twain's debut, released two years earlier, underperformed and didn't really connect with her because she didn't write any of the songs. The Woman In Me was a staggering success, with four #1 Country hits. "The Woman in Me (Needs the Man in You)" only reached #14 on the Country chart but crossed over to the Hot 100 at #90.

The album won the Grammy Award for Best Country Album and the Academy Of Country Music award for Album Of The Year, but apparently the Country Music Association didn't find it country enough - it wasn't even nominated for the Album Of The Year CMA.
  • The video was shot in Egypt, including at the Pyramids in Giza. It was directed by Markus Blunder, who also did Marc Cohn's "Walking In Memphis."
