Songfacts®:

  • Sick Puppies are an Australian rock band, formed in 1997. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Shimon Moore, bassist Emma Anzai and drummer Mark Goodwin. This song was the group's third single from their third album, Tri-Polar. It was their first tune to reach the Billboard Hot 100.
  • Emma explained the song's meaning in an interview with The Star Scoop: "It's a song about having the courage to make a change in your life no matter where you're at. The song reminds us of when we made the change as a band to come over to the States from Sydney Australia and start from scratch. We risked it all and took a chance. We're very glad we did."
  • The song's music video shows two people separately moving to a beach town in Southern California to improve their lives, and meeting there. Emma told The Star Scoop about the clip: "Travis Kopach directed it, it's about two people, a guy and girl who aren't happy with their lives and where they're at and they decide to make a change."
  • Anzai expanded on the song's message of the difficulties regarding making a major change in an interview with Noisecreep: "We are from Australia and we met our drummer in L.A. when we moved here five years ago," she explained. "It prompted the move. We were [without a label] and we had the choice to stay there or move over here, which is risky. We had to save up money and it was financially taxing, but we put our minds to it and we did everything it took to come here. The song is about our decision to take the risk and make a change," the bassist added. "We were from a different country and we started the band in high school. We had to take out loans, max out [credit cards] and put it all into one basket. Change is hard."
  • Anzai ruminated to Noisecreep that the song's popularity is because of its universal subject matter. "Everyone knows in their mind and life what it's like to be scared to do something," she reflected "Whether it's your parents or your partner or yourself that is pulling you back, everyone has that one fear. This song is not about just our experience. It's about yours, too. Everyone can relate to this."
