Songfacts®:

  • This pop banger finds Sigrid giving a kiss-off to a yes man. The Norwegian songstress explained that "High Five" is about "the importance of those relations where you both dare to be completely honest with each other, rather than exchanging superficial 'high fives.'"
  • Sigrid wrote this song with Martin Sjølie, who co-penned the Norwegian singer's "Don't Kill My Vibe" and "Strangers" and Emily Warren, whose resume also includes The Chainsmokers' "Don't Let Me Down", Sean Paul's "No Lie" and Dua Lipa's "New Rules."
  • It's obvious to Americans but less so in other countries, so we'll explain it: A high-five is a form of greeting or mutual congratulation in which two people slap each other's raised right hand. "Five" refers to the five fingers.
  • The E.T. and High School Musical inspired video was directed by long-term collaborator Ivana Bobic, a relationship that has already spawned music clips for Sigrid's breakout hit "Strangers" and Raw's title track.

"Sigrid and I talked a lot about the power of friendship," said Bobic. "We love all the high school movies, and Spielberg films like E.T or Close Encounters that are in a magical world but also really they're a metaphor for friendship."
  • So why did Sigrid choose a high five to signify superficiality? She explained to MTV News correspondent Meredith Graves:

"This song is about how important real relations are. A high five, for me, is a symbol of... when you get high fives, it's superficial. Like, when you only get the positive sides of a relation and not the real, negative sides too. If you only have that, it's not as good as having those real but tough relations."
