Songfacts®:

  • A sucker punch is a punch that takes the recipient by surprise. Here, Sigrid is thrown by finding unexpected happiness and she talks about the emotions that come with it.

It hit me like a sucker punch
Just one look and I'm out of touch
I'm freaking out 'cause I'm scared this might end bad
But I'll still come back for that

Sigrid has lost her cool because the new love has taken over her life.
  • Sigrid wrote the song with her "Don't Kill My Vibe" and "Strangers" producer Martin Sjølie, and frequent Chainsmokers collaborator Emily Warren. They penned it in Ocean Sound Recordings, which is the studio in singer's Norway hometown of Ålesund where she recorded her first songs.

Sigrid said: "The song is just a result of our usual way of working: talking, cooking, strolling, singing, dancing, experimenting."
  • The song is the title track of Sigrid's debut album. She explained to MTV News: "All of the songs are a bit of sucker punches. They're all very in-your-face type of songs. No matter if it's a ballad or up-tempo song, they're all songs you need to put on full volume. They're there to be heard; they're unapologetic and they need to be listened to."
