  • In her memoir Rememberings, Sinéad O'Connor wrote that this song was "a lesson I'd been having from a certain minister on the art and outcomes of praying Psalm 91, which is where my album's title is taken from."

    Sinéad claimed she could see inside people. For instance, after meeting someone once or twice, she could clearly envision where they lived and what their lives were like. She trained with this minister, a 47-year-old man who was also a medium, so she could "learn how to shut down the part of me that was drifting inside people without their permission." As part of her training, she had to read Psalm 91 out loud every day.

    The passage that contains the album title reads:

    You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
    You will trample the great lion and the serpent
  • O'Connor first recorded this song in London at a demo session for Ensign Records that landed her a deal with the label. Ensign, based in England, was looking for Irish acts because they had success with Thin Lizzy and the Boomtown Rats. O'Connor was in a band called Ton Ton Macoute, which is where a scout for Ensign discovered her. At the demo session, she recorded the song with Karl Wallinger of The Waterboys.

    There were four songs on the demo, three of which made the tracklist for The Lion And The Cobra. The others were "Drink Before The War" and "Never Get Old."
  • O'Connor wrote this song with Steve Wickham, who played various instruments in The Waterboys.
  • The song title is stylized like Prince, who substituted letters for words on tracks like "U Got the Look" and "I Would Die 4 U." On her next album, O'Connor recorded a little-known Prince song called "Nothing Compares 2 U."
  • Sinead O'Connor made her live TV debut performing "Just Like U Said It Would B" on the BBC show The Old Grey Whistle Test. On the same episode, U2 performed two songs from their upcoming album The Joshua Tree: "Exit" and "In God's Country."
