Songfacts®:

  • Probably the most famous song by the Delta Blues singer Skip James, this song showcases his fingerpicking guitar skills, something that would influence a number of guitarists, including Eric Clapton, who recorded this song with his band Cream on their first album Fresh Cream.
  • James based his song on one recorded by Lonnie Johnson called "I'm So Tired of Livin' All Alone," substituting the phrase "So Glad" in place of "So Tired."
  • Deep Purple recorded this in a medley with "Prelude to Happiness" for their 1968 debut album Shades of Deep Purple. A live version appears on their album Inglewood - Live in California. >>
