Songfacts®:

  • The lyrics of this song describe the daily routine of a baker who is motivated by the need to earn his keep. Bassist Ronnie Lane penned them inspired by a book of Sufi wisdom given to him by Pete Townshend of The Who that addressed "how hard you'll work if you're hungry."

Lane also took inspiration for this psychedelic hard rocker from his visits to Ibiza, where a neighbor used to bake bread in his traditional Balearic bread ovens.

"The lyrics came from Ronnie's Sufi investigations, with the importance of the 'wheat in the field' and all that," drummer Kenney Jones told Uncut magazine. "I love his melodic bass playing on it. He used to think like he was playing lead guitar and that mentally fused into his bass playing."
  • "Song Of A Baker" is on side one of Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake. The first side showcases a variety of musical styles, while the second side tells the story of a character named "Happiness Stan" who goes on a quest to find the missing half of the moon.
  • Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake displayed Small Faces' musical and technical intricacies, but because live performances were shorter sets as part of shared bills, the band never played the album live in full. Nonetheless, this song, "Lazy Sunday" and "Rollin' Over" were frequently included in the band's shows.
