Songfacts®:

  • Smoke & Jackal is a side project of Kings of Leon bassist Jared Followill and Mona singer and guitarist Nick Brown, whose bond can be partly attributed to their shared Pentecostal upbringing. This is their debut single, which was recorded by the two friends in Brown's basement studio in Nashville, during downtime from their respective bands. It was released digitally on August 28, 2012.
  • The song's explicit lyrics about sex caused more than a few eyebrows to be raised. However Brown told NME the pair "never expected anyone would take it seriously." He added: "One of the big things on this project we wanted to do was not really second-guess stuff, just do what happens in the moment and leave it up to other people's interpretation. It's talking about how whether it's drugs or sex or anything, everyone assumes they're going to stop, but we all go a little too far. In the spirit of that moment we left the lyrics blunt."
