Songfacts®:

  • Snakehips are a British production duo comprising Oliver Lee and James Carter. They recruited American singer Tinashe and hip-hop artist Chance the Rapper to supply the vocals on this track, which tackles the negative effects of a party lifestyle.
  • Tinashe commented to Genius: "I think this song is really special because it is just a different perspective on a party song than you typically hear. It's usually like a 'we're going to go pop some bottles' perspective. This is more introspective, like 'I actually don't really want to be here, This really isn't that fun for me right now. This is just stupid. The fact that we are just here just getting wasted for no reason, why are we here?'

But it's not totally negative. I think that juxtaposition is the magic. It is teetering on the edge of light and dark – it's sonically bright but then lyrically it feels a little bit darker, and that makes it really special and creates an interesting dialogue."
  • Tinashe previously worked with Chance the Rapper when the hip hop artist jumped on a 2013 remix of "Ecstasy", a track that was originally released on the singer's mixtape, Reverie.
  • After the Snakehips pair had made the beat, they decided they wanted Tinashe and Chance The Rapper to supply the vocals. However, they didn't expect it to happen as they were both huge artists in their own right. "But they were both really into it, and we managed to put it all together," Snakehips said. "It was recorded in a few places, and we never all got into the studio at once just because everyone's schedules were so crazy!"
  • This won the award for Best Contemporary Song at the 2016 Ivor Novello Awards.
  • The track's lyrics are about a night out gone awry. Oliver Lee told The Guardian: "The song isn't based on a particular experience, but years of them. I feel like we've all been there, when you have a super-wack night out."
