Sombr is a multi-instrumentalist who writes, produces, and co-produces his music. He cites his voice as his most powerful instrument. Sombr's music draws inspiration from the likes of Radiohead, Phoebe Bridgers, Bon Iver and The 1975. His songs often explore themes of heartbreak, love, and self-discovery, earning him a reputation for creating "sad girl anthems."
His real name is Shane Boose. So why Sombr? He told 1883 magazine, "Essentially, there are a few things. It has my initials on it, SMB. Also, to be quite honest, I was going through a rough part of my life when I released my first single. 'Sombr' kind of made sense for how I was feeling, and it was also available like no one had used it so it just felt right."

Sombr offered a simpler explanation to 103.5 KTU, saying his stage name came from a typo in a text. He meant to write "somber," but friends thought "Sombr" sounded cooler, so it stuck.
Sombr was born and raised in the Lower East Side of New York City. His father, a former musician in a New York City performance-art rock band, had a significant influence on his musical upbringing.
Sombr started making music with GarageBand on his phone when he was about 11. By 14 he was using a makeshift recording studio in his bedroom, funded by a summer job scooping ice cream.

"I was making rap beats," he told Firebird magazine. "I spent hours in my room when I was younger teaching myself how to produce music and it was really during the Covid lockdown that I found the time to improve my production skills and take them to the next level."
He attended LaGuardia High School, a prestigious performing arts school, where he studied classical music as a vocal major.
Released on June 15, 2022, "Caroline" was Sombr's first single to blow up. It went viral on TikTok and amassed tens of millions of streams on Spotify.
After signing with Warner Records, Sombr released his first EP, In Another Life, on September 15, 2023.
Before he fully committed to music, Sombr was an avid skateboarder. He had to give it up after breaking his arm multiple times, which interfered with his ability to play guitar.
As a child, Sombr wanted to be a veterinarian because he loves animals.
Sombr prefers to pen his songs in complete isolation. He says writing is too personal to share in a room with others, and he can only be fully vulnerable when working alone.
Speaking to Z100 New York, Sombr described his writing style as "like therapy," explaining that he starts with raw, unfiltered feelings and then builds the music around them. For him, lyrics aren't polished first - they're excavated.
He designs a lot of his own merch, sketching out ideas on diner napkins during tour stops and then handing them over to a graphic artist to digitize.
Sombr has a "bopper" mic stand, which he designed himself. He made it so he can fling it around and it snaps back like a boomerang or can be thrown and caught. His stage gimmick has become as much of a talking point as his songs.
When asked for New York City food tips, Sombr skipped the tourist spots and went straight to local institutions, Tompkins Square Bagels and Russ & Daughters. His go-to order is an everything bagel with cream cheese and lox.
