Songfacts®:

  • This club-styled gospel hit has sold 2 million copies worldwide. In the UK it reached the Top 10 on three separate occasions, first in 1991 when it peaked at #4, followed by a 1997 remix by Now Voyager (aka John Truelove) that went one better, climbing to #3. Finally, another 2006 mix by New Voyager (also Truelove) got to #7.
  • "You Got The Love" plays in the closing scene of the series finale of the TV show Sex & The City. It also features in the British gangster movie Layer Cake.
  • Candi Staton is a committed Christian and the song has a clear Christian message, which talks of God's love.
  • This is based on a 1985 Chicago House recording by Jamie Principal & Frankie Knuckles called "Your Love." There are some claims that it was the first ever House track. "Your Love" was never released on vinyl but tapes were circulated round the clubs. Record producer John Truelove (aka The Source - yes, the same guy who remixed it as Now Voyager and New Voyager) combined it with an acapella gospel track Candi Staton had recorded for comedian Dick Gregory and in 1991 it became a huge international club hit.

Candi Staton is best known for her 1976 disco hit "Young Hearts Run Free." In 1982 she formed her own gospel label Beracah Records. She was married for a time to Clarence Carter.
  • Candi Staton told The Quietus that she originally hooked up with The Source in Chicago to record this song for a diet product. She explained: "The video was about this guy losing weight. He was 900lbs and needed to lose lots of weight. The video didn't happen because he lost nearly all of the weight but was still 300lbs. Everything stopped and I just thought it was over until I heard that it was in the top ten in Europe. I was like 'Oh my God!' At first I didn't even know how to sing it! I didn't even know when to come in on time! It was confusing but we mix about two or three versions together when we do it now and everyone seems to be happy with how we do it now!"
  • Florence + the Machine charted in the UK singles chart with a reworked version of this dance hit. Welch explained on her website why she covered the song: "As a kid, going to clubs and raves, this song made me feel love. At Bestival last year we were top of the bill on that stage, so we were thinking of n amazing cover we could do, and I thought of Candy Staton. Even in rehearsals, playing it was just the most euphoric feeling. Then playing it live and seeing everyone's arms in the air, and the faces – it was the best feeling ever! I was dressed as a genie sea-monster, and I remember looking at my guitarist as we played the first chords, and then there was the reaction and it was like tearing ourselves open and just exploding on the crowd, and then they all did it back. It's a feeling you couldn't express. I'm really excited that now in our live shows I'm going to be playing one of my favourite songs ever, loads."
  • When The Independent asked Candi Staton to share her thoughts on Florence Welch's version of "You Got The Love," she admitted that at first, she was upset. "It made me mad," she said. "We had just done that arrangement - we put three versions together, and it took us three days to do it."

She recalled unveiling the new version at Glastonbury in 2008, only to later hear Florence perform it with the same arrangement. "My band was livid. 'This is crazy! We just worked on that song!'"

However, her feelings eventually changed. "Then I got to thinking, and I love her for it now. Because she made me money from the publishing. So I'm like: 'Go, girl! You do your thing.' I don't care no more, ha ha!"
