Songfacts®:

  • The six Sports Team members met at the University of Cambridge and started the band after bonding over groups like Parquet Courts. This was one of the first tracks they wrote after they moved to London. It's a dig at the students at Goldsmiths, a university noted for its focus on the arts and production.

This avant garde is still the same
Go to Goldsmiths and they dye their fringes
Just to know they've made it only
When they sign the rights to Sony

Vocalist Alex Rice told The Sun the song is "about feeling like outsiders in a scene of art schoolers doing better than us. Loaded with bitterness, which I don't think we'll ever lose."
  • The song's sound was inspired by one of Sports Team's favorite albums, Sunbathing Animal by Parquet Courts. Rhythm guitarist Rob Knaggs told Apple Music: "I think we just really liked that it wasn't super neat, it seemed like they were having fun and it sounded like the sort of thing that, as non-musicians at that point, we could actually achieve."
