Songfacts®:

  • Growing up, north California native Stephen Sanchez fell in love with the tunes of '50s crooners like Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and The Platters. Once he began writing his own songs, Sanchez looked to capture the simple romance of the music he loves. Released on September 1, 2021, "Until I Found You" became his first hit after it went viral on TikTok.
  • Sanchez was in a bad place when he first met singer-songwriter Georgia Webster. When she started showing him love, Sanchez didn't feel good enough for Georgia, so he pushed her away. They spent some time apart – she in Virginia and him in California – then a month before he moved to Nashville, he contacted her on the phone. Sanchez drove to Virginia, took her for a date, and they connected just like old times. They've been together ever since.

Sanchez penned "Until I Found You" to tell Georgia "how much I love her, and to let her know I knew how much of an idiot I was when I let her go the first time."
  • Georgia Webster also contributes vocals to the song while Sanchez plays the electric guitar.
  • Ian Fitchuk produced the track. The Nashville producer is best known for co-producing Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour and Star-Crossed albums alongside Daniel Tashian.
  • Sanchez released an updated version featuring Em Beihold on April 2, 2022. The Los Angeles-based musician contributes a verse from Georgia's perspective, where she assures him she'd rather die than let him go.
  • Sonically, this takes inspiration from Sanchez's grandfather's mid-20th century music collection. "My grandpa has this amazing property in San Jose, California, and there are two barns on either side and the house sat right in the middle," he explained to Billboard. "It's on top of this hill, and you can oversee all of San Jose. In the mornings, they would make me breakfast, and then they would tell me to go out in the barn and pick through vinyl. My grandpa is 85 years old at this point, so the only records he has are records from the '50s and '60s. I would pick through vinyl and just get inspired. Even now, I still do that every time I go up there."
  • Sanchez wrote the song on an old Rickenbacker and amp that he bought from Carter Vintage Guitars in Nashville. "That's what gave it that '50s and '60s sound," he said. "I was playing around with other '50s covers - like Paul Anka and The Penguins - and then that song popped out. It felt like it was pulling from my roots in a very huge way."
  • Blackpink member Rosé released a cover of "Until I Found You" on YouTube on February 10, 2023. Her rendition of Sanchez's song coincided with her 26th birthday the next day, February 11.
  • The Stephen Sanchez and Em Beihold duet version of "Until I Found You" plays in the second season finale of Ginny & Georgia, which premiered alongside the rest of the season on January 5, 2023.
  • "Until I Found You" re-entered the UK Singles Chart at #14 after Sanchez performed it with Elton John at Glastonbury 2023 during the Sunday headline slot. The song had previously peaked at #16 on the UK chart in January 2023.
