Songfacts®:

  • The video for this song was shot in the house wher Barton grew up. When we spoke with Steve in 2012, he said, "It was right before we sold it. It was empty and I thought 'Let's go in and say goodbye to it, in a way.'" The song is about the house and how Steve wanted to move into the next part of life without it after his father died. (Here's the full Steve Barton interview.)
  • The line in the song about "TEAC 3-3-4-0, threaded tape and plugged in long ago – oh what a lovely overdose" is all about the endless hours that Barton would spend in his bedroom with his TEAC 4-track reel-to-reel machine.
  • Barton told us that the lyrics in this song talk about very specific things in his parent's house. The first line is, "Yarmouth the drifter in a glass case, always heading out to sea." There was a boat that his dad brought back from England in 1963. It was called the Yarmouth Drifter and was kept in a glass case. Steve used to look at it while it sat up on a mantle in the den of the house for his entire life. After his father died, Steve took the boat from the house and moved it to his own.
