Songfacts®:

  • "Get Me Out" has an unsettled feel with some bluesy guitar by Steve Hackett, who did time with the band Genesis from 1971-1976. The song is a musical embodiment of his time in the band, which was topsy-turvy.

"There's a time to get off the merry-go-round, there's a time to get off the roundabout, and my time in Genesis was drawing to a close, so it really talks about that," Hackett explained to Songfacts. "I use the term 'the circus' to discuss anything that was going on with my life while touring with the band. It is a circus on the road, there's no doubt about it."
  • Hackett describes this song as a "dance of death."

"It's almost rock music meets film noir, and the influences of everything, including the 'Perry Mason Theme,'" he said. "I always liked that – it always scared the hell out of me as a kid when I first heard it."
  • The song is part of Steve Hackett's concept album The Circus And The Nightwhale, which is based on his life in roughly chronological order. He wrote the track with his producer Roger King and wife Jo.
