Songfacts®:

  • This atmospheric and heartfelt ballad is a track from the Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard's second solo album, Moonlander. Gossard became the first member of Pearl Jam to release his own record when he dropped his first solo set, Bayleaf, in 2001.
  • Gossard explained to Billboard magazine that the song is "a story about this moment in a dream where you shock yourself by doing something that you wouldn't expect that you would do which in this case was smacking my nephew in the face. And going, 'oh my God, how did I just do that?' But then the irony is that he… he's sort unfazed by it."
The track then changes course to a positive message where, "I'm telling him he doesn't' need to light matches in his room because he has his own matches inside him."
  • The song was written by Gossard in the late 2000s. "I was listening to a lot of Hank Williams at that time," he told Billboard magazine. "The chord changes are very traditional, so the music has a real simplicity to it."
