Songfacts®:

  • I am Mr. Skeng, spot the difference
Big Mike, don't need no assistance

Stormzy first came to the attention of UK rap fans via his online WickedSkengMan series of freestyles. "WickedSkengMan 4," Stormzy's final installment of his "WickedSkengMan" freestyle series, gave him his first UK Top 20 in 2015.

Stormzy has continued to use his Skeng nickname in his rhymes along with another one: Big Mike. On "Mr Skeng" from his 2017 debut album Gang Signs & Prayer, the South Londoner raps:

Call me Gunshot Mike or Mr. Skeng
  • The fast-talking track finds Stormzy reminding us of his grime roots.

Five whole years on a circuit
Every single year I merk it

He calls out fake UK rappers seeking the approval of artists from the other side of the Atlantic.

You man just love beggin' it too much
You man love the Americans too much
  • The song was released as a single on September 6, 2019. Its artwork is a reference to the movie poster for the 1965 musical The Sound of Music.
  • The bass-rattling beat comes courtesy of Sir Spyro. Previous collaborations between Stormzy and the grime producer include the rapper's 2017 single "Big For Your Boots" and the remix of Stormzy and Ed Sheeran's "Take Me Back To London."
