Songfacts®:

  • Jack Black of Tenacious D is an accomplished actor. He puts his acting chops to work on this song, where he gives a dramatic reading of all the musical genres that have tried to destroy heavy metal music, and have failed. Along the lines of Beavis And Butthead, or Black's character in the movie School Of Rock, Tenacious D often takes the role of the metal-obsessed teenagers we all knew in high school, which is ripe for parody - just ask anyone who's seen Spinal Tap.
  • There is an important visual element to this song: a guy dressed like a robot who represents "The Metal" during Tenacious D's performances of this song. Near the end of the song, there is some choreography with Jack Black and the robot.
  • This was used in the video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.
  • In 2006, Tenacious D performed this when they were the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. >>
