Songfacts®:

  • This old-time-sounding song finds Seth Avett singing from the perspective of someone going through a tough divorce. The subject is something the vocalist knows about, having split from his wife Susan in 2013. "It is odd to me that more songs aren't specifically written about divorce, considering how painfully common the event has become," Seth Avett commented to The Huffington Post.
  • The downtrodden lyrics are accompanied by a surprisingly upbeat melody and some yodeling. Seth Avett explained: "In this particular case, the idea for the song came along as a yodel, which I have no explanation for, except that I am a sucker for a sad song presented in a relatively bright or conversational way."
