Songfacts®:

  • The three band members co wrote this track with Texas native Brett Beavers, who has produced and co-written many of Dierks Bentley's hit tunes. Beavers also co-penned the siblings' debut single, "Hip to My Heart."
  • The song finds Kimberly Perry singing of escaping a possessive lover and she repeatedly exclaims, "I'm a free bird." Though the song conjures images of Lynyrd Skynyrd's classic rock tune, the vocalist told American Songwriter it wasn't an intentional nod to the southern band. She explained that the trio like "free bird" imagery, which can be seen in the gold necklace she wears on stage and on the album cover. "My signature piece of jewelry is this big free bird," she said.
