Songfacts®:

  • This song finds Andrew Taggart singing of a dysfunctional relationship where the only time his romantic partner tells him she loves him is when she's high.

I know it's my fault, I pick up your phone calls
When it's half-past one, and you're halfway drunk
You say you love me, and it sounds so dumb
But you're the only one I can't run away from

The Chainsmokers explained that the song "captures the spirit of today's relationships, the lengths we will go for someone we love, and the lies we tell ourselves to continue on unhappily."
  • Stylistically, the production incorporates pop-punk guitars and trap beats into the Chainsmokers' signature EDM-pop sound. The duo said they created a celebratory tune to accompany the dark lyrics, "Because we all know at the end of the day, we never listen to advice. We do what feels best for ourselves and keep telling ourselves it will be different this time."
  • Their first new song in over two years, The Chainsmokers released "High" as the lead single from their fourth long player on January 28, 2022. While Andrew Taggart and bandmate Alex Pall recorded most of the record in Hawaii, they created "High" after completing their album.
  • The Chainsmokers wrote the song with Natalie Solomon, Jacob Kasher, Dark Waves, Jeff Halavacs and Whethan. Dark Waves and Whethan also helped Taggart and Pall produce the track.
  • The Kid LAROI originally recorded vocals for the song but they never saw the light of day. Instead, Andrew Taggart sang the Aussie teen's parts.
  • The Kid. Studio-directed video sees Taggart take to the skies as he chases a love interest. After free falling through the air, he lands on an airplane (where Alex Pall is a passenger), before crashing back to earth.
  • The Chainsmokers performed "High" live for the first time during the Los Angeles Rams vs. San Francisco 49ers NFC Championship Game halftime show on January 30, 2022 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
