Songfacts®:

  • This ballad is a collaboration with Denver EDM musician Illenium. The song is Illenium's first appearance on a Chainsmokers single, though his remix for the duo's "Don't Let Me Down" was later included in The Chainsmokers' official remix collection.
  • The Chainsmokers first debuted the track with Illenium on March 31, 2019 during the closing performance at Ultra Miami. That rendition featured The Chainsmokers' Drew Taggard and Sorana as vocalists. However, the finalized version played later at Ultra Europe 2019 replaced Sorana with Lennon Stella's breathy, dreamlike vocals. (The Canadian country-pop singer-songwriter was The Chainsmokers' support act on their World War Joy tour). That final version was released as a single on July 24, 2019.
  • This isn't the first time the Chainsmokers have teamed up with a female country artist. The EDM duo previously collaborated with Kelsea Ballerini on "This Feeling."
  • Lyrically, the song is about an emotionally dishonest lover who pulls out of a relationship just as his partner is falling in deep.

I'll break your heart so you don't break mine

The lover doesn't give a reason for the break up, claiming "it's just me."
  • The song's music video, directed by Jeremiah Davis, was shot at the Vessel, an Instagram-friendly climbable sculpture at Hudson Yards in New York City. Its marks the first music video featured at the structure - something the Chainsmokers are proud of.

"We are so lucky to have had the opportunity to be one of the first artists to create a music video with The Vessel!" The Chainsmokers said in a statement. "We are from New York so to be a part of something that will be a huge part of New York City history is incredibly special to us."
