Songfacts®:

  • This song is about how the dreams and aspirations of youth can quickly turn disaffection and monotony when adulthood arrives:

All the things that a good man wants
Are set just beyond his reach

Despite the dour sentiment, the song is rather upbeat, and its modest success encouraged the band to keep moving forward. In our interview with Dead Ships lead singer Devlin McCluskey, he said: "I've been writing songs since I was 15 years old and really working on it for a long time. I do remember writing a song called 'You Were Young' that was sort of the single off of our first demos and one of the first songs that we did. And that song helped everyone get on board with the idea that we should be a band and keep going. I knew when I came up with the melody that it was hooky, with a good riff. All the parts are there and it flows really nicely."
