Songfacts®:

  • This is a dark, bluesy cover of a Bob Dylan song about a horse called Lucifer, which was originally included on the legendary singer-songwriter's 1978 album, Street-Legal. Vocalist Alison Mosshart explained to Billboard magazine: "For that song, we were just seeing how we could attack it and what we could get from it. We were kind of assuming we wouldn't even put those songs out. But they turned out really fiery and electric, so we kept them. I don't think we ever would have said that we'll put a Dylan song on this album. We'd never premeditate that, but it just came out so powerful."
  • This Dylan cover is part of the first Dead Weather album, Horehound. The band is a side project for the four members, one of which is Jack White, who had two other bands going at the time: The White Stripes and The Raconteurs. He was also opening a new recording studio in Nashville as part of his Third Man organization, and that's where the band recorded the album. When he opened the facility to the public on March 11, 2009, he did it by staging the first Dead Weather live performance. "New Pony" was one of five songs in their set.
