Dead Weather vocalist Alison Mosshart told Artist Direct about the song's lyrical content: "That was really inspired by the music. I had four lines of it written in my notebook, and I was flipping through it when they started to play that song. The rest of the song just wrote itself. I remember that one came really easily. The words fell into place, and it made perfect sense."
Jack White, the group's drummer and producer, told The Sun May 7, 2010 that this song was inspired by Lady Gaga. He explained: "I was thinking of the type of song a contemporary musician would write so I started thinking about her. I started thinking of how she would write the music to this song and got quite into being Lady Gaga in an odd way."

He added: "The lyrics are all from Alison, who was coming from a different direction. What I love about Alison's lyrics are her metaphors. They're really truthful and come from a real place. I like how she twists them to go along with the story she is telling-her lyrics are very visual."
