Songfacts®:

  • Colin Meloy croons from the point of view of a female addressing a man during this delicately sung track. "It's a cheeky song poking fun at gender stuff," he told The Sun. "I'll Be Your Girl is a kind of a rock 'n' roll trope like I'm Your Man."

"We're all discovering more about what gender means, the fluidity of gender, how much gender is just a construct," Meloy added. "People are really dividing in to camps. Some are open-minded while others are lashing themselves to the buoy of their gender, this idea of men who feel their masculinity is endangered."
  • The song is the title track of The Decemberists' eighth album. Meloy explained: "The record goes to so many dark places that I think the title needs to be something generous, more embracing."
