Celestial Mechanics

Album: Space EP (2015)

Songfacts®:

  • Running about 1:30, this is the fourth track on The Devil Wears Prada's Space, a concept EP with a celestial theme.

There is no singing on "Celestial Mechanics," but the distorted voice of keyboard player Jonathan Gering can be heard talking about fluctuations in time. He's talking about the "leap second" that is sometimes added to keep accurate time, since a full day, as measured by the rotation of Earth, is actually about .002 seconds longer than the day as measured by our atomic clocks. For this reason, an extra second is sometimes added to stay in synch. This occurred in 2015 when a second was added to the last minute of June.
