Songfacts®:

  • Dave Wakeling of The English Beat had his share of blue-collar jobs before becoming a full time musician. He worked in a car battery shop and also did construction - jobs that required a fair amount of public transportation. Says Wakeling: "'Big Shot' was about being stuck at a bus stop trying to go to work, and everybody would be driving by, one person in the car, and enjoying splashing in the puddles so as to soak everybody at the bus stops. So there I was at the bus stop seething. So it's people going after their office jobs, you know." (Read the full Dave Wakeling interview.)

  • AnonymousI've always been a fan of the Beat and am interested in the origins of songs. I would love to know whether Dave Wakelin was influenced by the Lee Perry song "People Funny Boy."
