Songfacts®:

  • This was written by band member Eddie Grant, who went on to have a hit with "Electric Avenue" as a solo artist.
  • Originally, this was the B-side of The Equals' "Hold Me Closer" single. That record did not capture much attention, but in early 1968 this was released as a single in Germany, where it rose to #1. After it subsequently topped the charts in Belgium and Holland the song was finally reissued in the UK, where it soared to #1.
  • The Equals were a pop group formed in England in 1965 by Derv Gordan (vocals), his twin brother Lincoln (guitar), Grant (guitar), John Hall (drums) and Pat Lloyd (guitar). They went on to have 12 more hits in Germany and two other UK Top 10 hits ("Viva Bobby Joe" and "Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys") before legal problems with the record company made it impossible to release any more records.

  • Shireen Mohandes from LondonSpoke to Pat Lloyd today (Oct 2022). They are still gigging, next year in Germany and in the UK. Pat lives in the Archway area. Really nice person.
  • Mark HaleyPat Lloyd told me the record was produced by Tony Clarke.
  • Alan T from Uk There are claims (for example in his obituary iun the London Times) that Moody Blues producer Tony Clarke produced "Baby Come Back". However the original label image does not credit a producer. The album label only credits "Edward Kassner" as producer - so not sure what the truth of all that really is. Anyone know for sure?
  • Barry from Sauquoit, NyIn 1978 the band Player released a completely different song titled "Baby Come Back", it peaked at #1 in the USA!!! {NOTE: The Equals actually had a comma after the word 'Baby', Player didn't}
  • Neil from Middlesbrough, United StatesThis song was also Covered by Pato Banton in the UK where it was Number 1
  • Jim from North Billerica, MaBonnie Raitt does a cover of this.
