Songfacts®:

  • The lead single from the Goo Goo Dolls' ninth studio album, "Home" was inspired by the band's lonely life on the road, being far away from the people they love. Frontman Johnny Rzenzik said the song is about "longing for that closeness and just doing a lot of searching around and coming to the conclusion that everything you need is really in your own backyard."
  • Rzeznik wrote this with Andy Stochansky, a Toronto-born musician and songwriter who got his start playing drums for Ani DiFranco. Stochansky also co-wrote the Goos' Magnetic track "Bulletproof Angel."
  • Rzeznik told American Songwriter why the band chose this as a single: "We felt like it was something that was different for us. Our record company generally likes to release something very safe and we were like, 'Come on man, lets do something that's more up-tempo and kind of sounds a little bit different than what we normally release as singles.' We had our conversations back and forth about it and finally we prevailed. I thought it sounded a little bit different than what they would normally release, and I think that's a good thing."
  • This peaked at #9 on the Adult Top 40 chart. It also bubbled under on the Hot 100 at #110.
  • This was produced by John Fields, one of many producers (including Tim Palmer and Butch Vig) to contribute to the album. Fields also helmed albums by Semisonic, Switchfoot, Backstreet Boys, Miley Cyrus, and Jonas Brothers, among others.
  • Two music videos were made. In the official video, directed by Morgan Lawley, the guys are sitting at a crowded restaurant table, clearly feeling out of place as everyone else enjoys themselves. The ensuing scene has them wandering through an empty Japanese market.

An earlier clip was released on Billboard.com as a placeholder video. Directed by Devin Sarno, it follows a young woman (Claire Marie Vogel) as she wanders the streets of Los Angeles. Sarno explained there was no real concept for the clip; he was just trying to create a vibe based on photo references he assembled. Vogel is also a photographer and director, who shot videos for Metallica ("Confusion") and Norah Jones ("Carry On").
