Songfacts®:

  • "Hot Together," the title track to the group's 1986 album, is a somewhat obscure Pointer Sisters song, or at least it was until it featured in the 2025 trailer for the video game Grand Theft Auto VI as part of a storyline about a couple whose passion for each other is matched only for their love of crime. The song got a huge streaming boost and drew attention to The Pointer Sisters, which were still touring, led by 79-year-old original member Ruth Pointer.
  • The song was written by Sharon Robinson, who wrote some songs with Leonard Cohen and co-wrote the Patti LaBelle hit "New Attitude." It was produced by Peter Bunetta and Rick Chudacoff.

For the most part, The Pointer Sisters didn't write their own songs. They selected songs submitted to them by various writers.
  • "Hot Together" came as the group was falling off the charts. They emerged in the '70s with a sultry R&B sound exemplified by their 1978 hit "Fire," written by Bruce Springsteen. In the early '80s they jumped on the trend of upbeat, keyboard-driven music, which served them well. Hits from this time include "I'm So Excited" and "Neutron Dance." "Hot Together" is in this vein, but that sound was falling out of favor, as was the group.
  • June Pointer sang lead on this one. The song takes place in a club where she spies a guy she has some history with. As they revisit their romance, she thinks about how good they are together, at least physically. We get the sense that this pair won't be together long.
  • The song shows up in a 1987 movie called Stakeout, starring Richard Dreyfuss, Emilio Estevez and Madeleine Stowe.
