Where Are You Christmas?

Songfacts®:

  • Taylor Momsen was just 7 when she played Cindy Lou Who in the 2000 live-action movie How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Jim Carrey chewing scenery like it was a holiday ham). In the movie, she sings a shorter, snowy-eyed version called "Christmas, Why Can't I Find You?" But when it came time to pump a radio single up the chimney, the studio called in Faith Hill. Momsen, adorable as she was, was considered too young for a full-blown pop release. Hill's chart-friendly rendition became the soundtrack staple.

In 2025, Momsen revisited the song with her Pretty Reckless bandmates like a ghost of Christmas past who now owns a distortion pedal.
  • The new version is a duet with Momsen's younger self, literally. It opens with her child voice over soft piano, the same one that once melted the Grinch's coal-black heart, before her present-day voice storms in and the track kicks into a full rock arrangement. It's a little bit "Silent Night," a little bit "Heaven Knows," and very much an emotional callback.

"Revisiting 'Where Are You Christmas' 25 years later feels like coming home to a part of myself I hadn't seen in a long time," Momsen said. "I was just a child when I first sang it... Recording it now, with all the life I've lived in between, I hear it through a different lens... but the heart of it is the same. It's about wonder, hope, and holding on to the magic, something I think we all need more than ever."
  • The music video leans hard into nostalgia, opening on an old Tonight Show with Jay Leno clip where he introduces young Taylor during the original Grinch promo run, a full-circle moment that practically jingles with sentiment. Directed by Ethan Lader (OneRepublic's "Good Life," Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are"), it then time-travels into the present, with Momsen fronting The Pretty Reckless in a grit-and-garland rock tableau: Santa-meets-CBGB. It's framed as a tribute to Taylor's evolution: from child actor/singer to frontwoman of a record-breaking rock band, and a celebration of where The Pretty Reckless now stand artistically.
  • "Where Are You Christmas?" is part of The Pretty Reckless' festive EP, Taylor Momsen's Pretty Reckless Christmas. The EP title was a strategic branding move so no one would be confused. Momsen told Zac Sang her idea was, basically, "let's put all the names in one giant bow," like labeling the gift so no one has to guess who it's from.
  • The Pretty Reckless played the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in an appearance broadcast on December 11, 2025.
